Genre: Contemporary
Release Date: September 30, 2014

Synopsis:

Past. Everyone has one. It shapes the person they become. It determines the present. It even contributes to the future. And sometimes, people are thrown together in spite of it.

It was no secret that Megan Verona was raped. It crippled her being, turning her from a vibrant young woman to someone who feared intimacy. After years of struggling, she decided to seek help with a therapist, Declan Connors, in hopes of being able to finally have a relationship. Declan wanted to help Megan; he wanted to help everyone who sought his aid, but she was different. She consumed his thoughts until he could no longer deny his feelings. He hadn’t expected to fall for her and fall hard, but he did. It was a wonder when she returned some of his sentiment. But, like everyone, Declan also has a past, one riddled with pain and anguish, one he hadn’t fully dealt with.

If helping Megan brought out his own shadows, what did loving her do? How do both their pasts play a role in their future? Most importantly, can they conquer the past that threw them together?

About the Author:

About me, huh? Hmmm, let's see...some fun facts: I'm in my late twenties, I'm married to a great guy who likes to drive me crazy sometimes, but I love it and him, I am one of those people that when asked to do something says "No...Yes" (yeah, I know, I'm stuck in the 90's), I am a total nerd (like you couldn't tell), I am a Trojan (Fight On!), I work in health insurance (fun times-well, I actually work with my sis, so I guess they technically are fun times), I am way too close to my fam and I feel like I'm forgetting something, hmm...oh yeah, I LOVE to read and write!!!!

"I can’t live in this stupid bubble; it isn’t doing me any good.
 I need out.
I need air to breathe.
 I need to be normal.”

Megan Verona is a single twenty-three year old young woman, who has never been in a relationship. At the age of sixteen she was brutally raped in an alleyway and left for dead. Now seven years later and she hasn’t made any headway with getting close to someone, romantically. Emotional scars stain her broken soul, encasing her within a bubble. Playing voyeur as the world passes her by. Aching and yearning, for that which she has never had. Megan wants to experience all the possibilities that a relationship can bring. The simplicity of intimacy and not just sexual intimacy but emotionally.

The perfectly crafted book cover is a beautifully poetic depiction of the raw emotions that Megan exudes. From the glassy eye, to the smudged mascara and the added touch that hints at stress lines as such a youthful age. A combination that portrays Megan’s brokenness and the gut wrenching pain she has been living with all these years.

Declan Connors is a retired military veteran turned therapist. He's Megan’s new therapist and even though she is broken, it didn't mean she couldn't be fixed. This is when things start to become interesting.

As their sessions progress Declan reveal Megan’s true fears. Her inability to be “normal” as overrated as normalcy is, Megan is not able to participate in life in the most fundamental ways.  It’s really heart-breaking to feel these emotions while reading, all based on Megan’s fears due to her traumatic past. Megan's character was strong and she was perfectly depicted for a leading role.

Some scars are physical but the greatest scars are those that cannot be seen.

To the outside world and Megan, Declan seems to be a well put together individual, with the answers to help cure her fears. But Declan is a tortured soul. He is hiding some deep seated secrets of his own. Secrets that disrupted his once happy and carefree childhood; a teenager betrayed and hurt, abused his grief and turned into an animal. A man - son, brother and friend- carrying around years of guilt.

As Megan and Declan's story progresses, he uses different techniques to aide Megan. Little by little, Declan breaks through  her psychological and emotional barriers and she is slowly reborn.

As Declan breaks through her barriers, he realizes he wants more than to be Megan's therapist. He wants to be her savior. Their coupling reveals devastating secrets that will destroy, betray and are the most brutal of all. Two tortured souls thrown together by faith, will they survive or will their secrets betray them.

"Past.
Everyone has one.
It shapes the person they become.
 It determines the present.
It even contributes to the future.
And sometimes, people are thrown together in spite of it."

*************

I was in awe of the way D.C. Renee portrayed Megan. Believe me when I say, as a reader you feel every single emotion. The devastation, the despair and the confusion of her tragedy. Megan was a strong heroine and she held true to her character's portrayal. Declan was a military hottie, while I felt his pain, I honestly didn't like him as much as I should have. He was sweet and endearing, but for me, I love a angsty, alpha male. He wasn't any of those and there's no angst. However, with that said, he had to be soft and sweet for a fragile Megan. So in hindsight, he was perfect. lolz.
