WHITE TRASH TRIOLOGY
4 stars
“There’s just a person. She gets me. I ‘ve never met anyone like her, and I know she is the one I’m supposed to be with.”
“A series of struggles strung together with the occasional moment of joy that makes it worth going another day.”
This one simple quote, is filled with so much meaning, so much yearning; joy, happiness, sorrow, pain, anger and heart ache. Pure unadulterated desperation to be....
Eric is the drummer for Damaged. He's a sexy, muscled, and tatted Alpha male who hides his pain behind his anger. With a continuous line of booze and women.
“The deeper your love, the harder you fall when it goes bad.”
After witnessing the death of his nine year old brother when he was hit by a car has destroyed Eric. His father blamed him for his brother’s death and used him as a punching bag. He took all of his anger out on Eric. His coldhearted words and irrevocable actions, had Eric leading a guilt ridden life. A life of pain and despair. A life quelled within the bottle.
A brother lost, a family destroyed, a father's hatred. A life alone.
Eric kept himself closed off and built walls around himself. Walls used to protect him from letting anyone in. Walls that kept the guilt inside.
There's only been one person Eric could ever be himself with, Sarah. To Eric, Sarah is sooo much more than his best friend. She's his everything.
*********
Sarah is the lead singer for Filth, she's one of Eric's best friends, and she's also the girlfriend of her Rock Star bandmate, Derek. Sarah and Derek’s relationship has always been a crazy kind of love. They fought and hurt each other, but they could never stay away.
Sarah has a secret. A shameful, disgusting secret, that keeps her empty.
Sarah has been sexually abused from the age of 11, when her mother married Phil, her new step father after four months of dating. Phil’s coldhearted remarks, his violating touches, her mother’s indifference to her sadness, all of the pain she endured needed an outlet. The only memento her father left behind, was an old disposable razor. It was her most priceless possession- it belonged to her father and it allowed her to escape. She dragged an old disposable blade across her inner arm, letting all the pain, sadness, anger and hurt slip away into thin red streaks of nothingness. Sarah filled the void within herself through her music and by turning a blind eye to her cheating boyfriend, Derek. Derek was always their for her and he never asked questions.
“I can be anyone but never myself, locked away like a china doll, kept prisoner on the shelf,” Sarah.
Everything Sarah does, her actions, reactions, they are all a direct result of her past. Sarah has never enjoyed sex. Not ever. After her childhood with Phil, even with her Rock Star boyfriend, "she could never tell him she doesn’t feel like making love." She blocked it all out whislt in the act, playing the notes to “Free Bird” in her mind. However, only one person got through to her, E. His one forced, drunken kiss, is all Sarah can think about.
“The flames lick at my fingertips as I’m drawn to the fire,”
“In a crowded room, you’re all I see. So thought consumed, baby let it be… The past can haunt, but it cannot touch. You’ve given your all and loved too much. Take my hand, let me lead…
You’re loved too, baby, and you belong with me…”
Onstage, Sarah was strong and independent she was free; singing and making music.
But offstage, she was anything but. Sarah was weak and insecure, reeling from all the pain she suffered , hiding a sickening secret from her childhood. She self destructs when left alone; in pain and anger. Hiding behind this façade, fighting her attraction to Eric, Sarah continued to accept all the weak lies that Derek spurred.
Derek starts to realize that Sarah and Eric are closer than he can comprehend. He's threatened by Eric and decides to take Sarah home to Texas to meet his family. But in doing his, he is shortening Sarah's time with her friends. An argument later, Derek storms off, Sarah gets drunk and starts cutting to ease the pain. Derek returns and another fight ensues and this time, Sarah's escape threatens her life.
Sarah finally fucking gets it when derek flys home after being released from the hospital to fly home to Texas. He didn’t come and see her, he didn’t want to have anything to do with her therapy sessions. HE LEFT HER!!!! This is when she finally Effin gets it. Gosh, this girl is so passive and such and idiot.
Eric stands by Sarah day after day, helping her heal, whilst healing himself. Both Sarah and Eric makes amends with their pasts.
“My heart skips from your glance and I can’t look away,
You’ll break me but take me, there’s no other way,
Life on the road, babe, I’m a rolling stone,
No matter where life takes us, you’ll always be my home.” Eric
My thoughts: For most of this book, I was extremely annoyed with Sarah. She was such a passive person, accepting everything Derek did in the name of love. Even though I understood she was hiding her past and herself from Derek, she was mostly concerned with his false love or rather her false love for him. Just want to keep the façade alive. The story was cyclical, with Sarah going back and forth with her attraction for Eric. Then hurting him by sticking with Derek.
Why I rated it 4 stars. Well this time around, it wasn't so much the story that had me reeling but rather the ending. Eric and Sarah both realized that they needed to face their pasts. Living a life of seclusion, hurt, anger and pain, without ever letting go and coming to terms with their situations. They stuck by each other, as best friends and took their relationship slowly. Even though they both loved each other. They healed as friends and then as lovers.
